Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the verge of making history, needing just 97 runs to become the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander has the opportunity to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s 49-year-old record when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, starting on July 2nd.

Jaiswal’s consistent performance has been a significant positive for India, especially during this transitional period in the longest format of the game. He recently demonstrated his skill with a superb century in the first Test at Headingley. Despite his efforts, India suffered a five-wicket defeat. England's Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root successfully chased down a formidable 371-run target, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Jaiswal’s individual form remains a key source of hope for India as they seek to recover at Edgbaston. In his 20 Tests so far, he has accumulated 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved this milestone in his 23rd Test in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Following him are Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who reached the 2,000-run mark in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal now has a golden opportunity to join and even surpass these legends. His success could provide India with a crucial boost in this must-win Test match.
