The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer. Gupta is set to assume the role on July 7, 2025, becoming the seventh CEO in the organization's history.
Gupta brings a wealth of experience to the ICC, currently serving as CEO, Sports & Live Experiences, at JioStar. His background spans over two decades in media, entertainment, and sports. He transitioned from journalism to Star India in 2010, where he held various leadership positions in content and strategy. In 2020, he became Head of Sports at Disney & Star India. Following the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star in 2024, he was appointed CEO of JioStar Sports.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating, "I am pleased to announce that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as the CEO of the ICC. Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization, which will be invaluable for the ICC."
Shah further emphasized Gupta's understanding of the global sports landscape, combined with his passion for technology and insight into the cricket fan's perspective. These qualities, according to Shah, will be crucial in the ICC's ambition to expand the game's reach in the coming years. The ICC's goals include establishing cricket as a regular sport in the Olympics, expanding its global presence, and strengthening its foothold in core markets.
"We considered several exceptional candidates for this position, but the Nominations Committee unanimously recommended Sanjog. The ICC Board Directors look forward to working closely with him, and I would like to welcome him on behalf of everyone at the ICC," Shah added.
The ICC stated that Gupta's appointment is the result of a global recruitment process, initiated in March 2025, which attracted over 2,500 applications from 25 countries. The ICC's HR & Remuneration Committee narrowed the field to 12 candidates, who were then evaluated by a Nominations Committee comprising ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, ECB Chair Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva, and BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia. The ICC Board unanimously approved Gupta's nomination after a final assessment.
Sanjog Gupta, the incoming ICC CEO, shared his excitement about the new role: "It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is poised for unprecedented growth and enjoys the passionate support of almost 2 billion fans worldwide." He highlighted the exciting times ahead for the sport, with marquee events gaining prominence, commercial opportunities expanding, and the women's game growing in popularity. He also noted that cricket's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid adoption of technology could significantly boost the sport's global movement.
Gupta concluded, "I look forward to contributing to the next phase of cricket's evolution, expanding its global footprint, enhancing the fan experience, and working closely with ICC Member Boards to build on our strong foundations."
